So, I'm working on a project right now and I can't think of a word... here's my best way to explain this...

Language is to dialect
as
Music genre is to ______

The word I'm looking for is like a specific style of music and for comparison....
i.e. it would be used for description of the difference between Indie Pop and Light pop.... or between Metal and Death Metal... etc

Perhaps genre wasn't the best term to use.

Maybe saying music style would be more precise...

I think the trouble lies in that "language" is a broad term and "music genre" is specific. What you might consider doing is changing your analogy to read:

Language is to dialect as music is to ________.

Then you need to find a subset of music that describes musical style, as dialect describes a variety of language.

My best guess would be a sub-genre.
