Having been in management and supervisory positions with each of the world's two largest banks, I can tell you that banks have no commitment to career progression. While in most industries, superior performance normally leads to promotion, in banks it just makes you more indispensable in your current position. If you're doing your job well, they don't see a reason to remove you from it.
