ITS ONLY FOR WHEN THE BABY IS gone, while the baby's away from her, so its something to do while the baby's gone, and there bottle or bottles or milk when she gets back

it is not a rule that if you pay a lot of money the product will serve you better.i personally use avent, manual breast pump, and on some days it takes me 50 min to get 100ml then again sometimes the bottle is full in 20min.so,i guess that it depends on her,the time, the place, and of course when did the baby had the last feed.she should make couple of hours brake between the feed and the expressing of the milk.another thing,if she does it more often the milk supply will be better so she should be able to get more milk more quickly.try www.babycenter.com for different brands and models, they also have comments and best sellers. best of luck

How old is your baby? If this is early days, her milk might still be coming in. I had this problem the first few days with my second baby--I could only get a little bit of colostrum.

Is she doing one side at a time? She should be, and if so, one side may have less milk than the other, or a really slow letdown, as I do.

If the baby is older and is gaining weight fine, then it could be the pump. It should feel like a very strong suction--and her nipple should be going way into the tube of the pump.

Is this a temporary thing to get her supply up? Or is it going to be ongoing for work, time away from baby, etc.? If it's temporary, I would advise renting an electric pump from a pharmacy. In Canada they are cheap to rent and they work very well--you can adjust speed and suction to mimic how baby's suck.

Please don't listen to the advice to "just use formula"!!! To supplement with formula will cause her supply to go down, as baby is not stimulating breast, nor is the pump.

You can buy good used pumps on Craigslist.

If it turns out to not be the pump, you can get a lactation consultant, or contact La Leche League for a contact in your area.

Good luck. Keep up the good work! Lucky baby to have such a dedicated Mama who knows the value of Mama's milk!

No, all breast pumps aren't alike. If she is going to be pumping often she might want to invest in a better pump, like a Medela.

It could also be that she is so caught up in how much she is pumping she isn't having let down. I had to be relaxed and thinking of my baby in order for me to start letting down milk. I would go from one ounce to several ounces quickly.

How much milk you get with a breastpump isn't an accurate measurement of how much milk a nursing baby gets. A nursing baby can get more out.

You can suggest that she speak to a lactation consultant at the hospital and look into renting a more expensive pump and see if it makes a difference before you invest in one.

Good luck!

First off, pumps are no indication of supply.

Why is she supplementing?

She may just not respond well to a pump, a baby is the most effective way to get milk out.

I had a hospital grade pump and i still got more milk out by hand expressing.

Heres a site that may ehlp get the baby off the supplements

Electric pumps are faster than manual pumps, but a lot depends on how fast her let down is and how long ago the baby ate. If she just nursed the baby she will have a lot less than if she nurses a couple of hours afterward. You can also rent breast pumps-ask the hospital.

I bought a pump that was around 150$ and it had a dial on it. You could turn it up or down. And it did the job. But sometimes i just didn't have alot of milk. So she just might not have a lot of milk and if she does or if she is hurting i would get a better pump

I know by experience that investing in a $40 pump is not such a good "investment". They are terribly slow and inefficient. I know that it may seem totally ridiculous to spend $300 on a breast pump but if you know for a fact that you will be sticking with breast feeding your child for awhile then you should buy a medela pump they are the BEST for your dollar and time!!

If you're planning on using it at all regularly, a quality breast pump is a must. If she's using one of those awful syringe-style hand pumps, I'm not at all surprised that she only has an ounce.

A spendier pump will have a motor that cycles to more closely mimic a baby's sucking, and you will be able to pump both sides at once. Plus, you'll be able to better control the suction, making it more comfortable and increasing production.

I had an electric The First Years breast pump and it worked great. It only cost around $60.
