It's possible to have broken your knee cap or patella. You could've bruised it as stated, and you could have damaged the ligaments around your knee. You probably should have an xray. Use crutches and keep icing it, for up to 3 days. 20 minutes on every 4-6 hours. Hope you feel better soon. If you're not 18, make sure you tell your parents. Ask them about pain medicine, like Tylenol or Advil.

If you can bend your knee all the way and straighten it all the way without feeling sharp pains on top of what you are already feeling, then you probably have a very bad bruise. There are a bunch of tendons in your knee that become extremely painful when they are bruised. Tendons contain concentrations of very sensitive nerves that tell your brain where your knee is and what it is doing, so these nerves go wild when they are bruised. It might take a week or more before the pain goes away completely.

You should stay off the leg for a few days: keep the leg elevated, use ice 4 or 5 times a day for 20 minutes, wrap the knee with an ace bandage when not using ice, and take Alleve or ibuprofen to control inflammation.

If you do not have a full range of motion or if you have sharp pains when the knee is in a certain position, you may have damaged the knee cap, and you will need to see a doctor. .

always apply icepacks to an injury first, then after the swelling goes down, heat packs. You could have a serious injury requiring arthroscopic surgery, or it could just be a bad bruise. You won't know until you go have it looked at. I guess you could wait a couple days to see if the pain starts to go away.

Please go and see a specialist. A knee injury cannot for the most part be diagnosed from the outside. I have had three of them and I recommend an Orthopedist. you will have your answer maybe i the doctors office, and possibly with a cat-scan...or an MRI......don't take chances with this...as it could have dire long lasting effects.
