After a few minutes of cursing, I slap my forehead and turn off the hold switch.

Go to Apple.com support website and follow instructions. If you mean frozen as in an icicle then you should warm it up slowly and carefully, and hope that it will keep working.

try rebooting it
to reboot it hold the menu button and the center button at the same time for about 7 seconds and it should reboot and work fine!!
