Yes, the amish is a subculture. A subculture refers to a group of people within a larger society that participate in most of the organizations and structures of the larger society they share some beliefs, values and norms with that large society, but also have some separate organizations and structures and a few different beliefs, values and norms from the larger culture. So with that being said, the amish live in the American society. But they are a group who live together, they share the same goverment and economy as the american society, they also have to live by the same laws. But they have there own schools and churchs. they have different beliefs and norms they we do, a few of them are you should'nt kill people even if it is self-defense or war, you should not have electricity, you should use the land for food, and no cars. this is what makes them a subculture.

They do not conform to Americas societal norms therefore are not part of our culture in the true sense of the word. BUT they do live within our culture so they are a culture within a culture which is a subculture.....make sense?

The amish culture is not allowed to own any elctronic or gas powered machinery, they are allowed to use them, however. It is based upon this fact that I view them to be mooches overall..........

I think I get what you are trying to say.. They really don't participate in the Mainstream culture, so I guess they are really a co-culture

I'm curious as to who told you it was a subculture. I guess you could say they're a subculture of Christian fundamentalists; or maybe conservative farmers??? I dunno.
