Man, if the daily open hockey you are talking about is as casual as most, you have nothing to worry about. Generally speaking in that sort of situation, you will get a wide range of skill levels playing. 99% of the players are there just to have fun and will do more to help you than anything else. Guaranteed you will find players like yourself who although their skill may be limited just want to have some fun playing this great game. Heck, I know that's the way it was when I played my first pickup game last winter at the age of 40. I realized as I stepped on the ice that I had never actually played a hockey game in a rink before. My limited experience was only on ponds and street hockey. It is a blast. Jump on the ice, don't look back and enjoy this game for what it is. You will wonder why you waited so long.

Your doubts probably stem from anxiety about embarassment. If it is friendly scrimmaging or pickup games, you have nothing to worry about. It is natural to feel this way, questions that often enter ones mind include "will they like me? Will I seem weird? Will I play well? Will I embarass myself? etc; the best way to go is probably to play. Once you become acclimated it will be great. The first time I played in a pickup game my friend who came with me were racing for the puck in a corner. We were going as fast as we could go. I was concentrating so hard on beating my friend I forgot that the puck was against the boards. I slammed into the boards at full speed, fell backwards, lost my breath and got up shook my head a couple of times and sat out for half an hour or so. Its a funny story now and I am glad for the memory. Good luck.

It happens. I'd go through with it. A few days of second guessing probably doesn't mean as much and the months and years you have spent wanting to play. People get this sort of "stage fright" all the time. You'll probably forget all about it when you start playing and you'll just cut loose and have some fun.

Hockeys all about fun man. Just go out there and have fun. Hell my 1st time, I was 3 and I cried so hard because I didn;t want to go out there. 18 years of travel hockey, high school hockey, and beer leagues and I still love the game. Go out there! You won't regret it!

Ah. Then go through with it. After a while you will be glad you did. Then your 600$ equipment will become wretched, stinky worthless equipment.

Do it ... life's biggest regrets are things we didn't do.
I'll bet there are many people there who are in the same shoes. The best part is you'll be with lots of people who love the game.
