Hi,
Please don't kill the fish. I had the same problem with one of my goldfish and he lived for several years without any problems.
First step ..... Find the cause...... some possible reasons for losing eyes could be
1. Are there any sharp objects in the tank? if yes, Please remove them as they may further injure the blind fish.

2. Are there any aggressive fish in the tank? if yes, please move the blind fish to a smaller tank.

3. Do you have a sucking catfish(the one which sticks to the glass) in the tank? if yes, then she might be the culprit . Many aquarist don't know but if this catfish is hungry then she sucks slime and eyes of other fish.

Second step...........About feeding the fish.
1. goldfish have a very strong sense of smell, so she will learn to find her food by smelling, but ensure you spread the pellets all over the tank.

Putting him to 'sleep' is murder,no matter how you look at it. Your kids should be aware of it,fully. No sweet talking,no 'he went to sleep'. If you can't be bluntly honest with them, don't do it.

Suffering is a part of life. Though if he's eating,he's not suffering. When there's something TRULY wrong with a fish (well, aside this guy, apparently with missing eyes!) they do NOT eat.

Would you kill a human or a dog just because it didn't have eyes? No? Then don't kill your fish. Take care of him just as good as you were and hope for the best.

wow...I have owned tanks for years and have never heard of this. He probably has an infection that caused it. The thing is, if he is eating and living normally, let him be. If he feels well enough to eat, he may have beat the problem and is trying to live. God be with him...

Also.... if you do decided to "put him to sleep, " please make sure you are using humane methods. For fish, there really are none. Flushing is cruel, they live in the sewer and suffer before they die. Taking them out of the water is the same as strangling someone. Use the vet....

I JUST WANT TO ADD I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE ANSWER ABOVE...100%! Good advice all the way around.

I don't know why, but fish lose their eyes sometimes. It's happened to me a few times with all kinds of fish. You're kinda stuck if your kids are attached to it. I'd say just keep it. If you kill it now the kids will have to deal with it now. It might hang in for another year or two and then your kids can deal with it better when they're older.

That's a tough one and I'm not sure there is even a correct answer. Are there any other goldfish with him? If there is at least one other I'd think he'd be happier. It must be really lonely not to see and have no one around.

If I kept him alive, I'd give him something to look forward to as a treat. Like a few bits of raw shrimp or whatever it is he doesn't normally get that he goes crazy for.

as long as he's eating and everything keep him alive!

I love the suggestion in the first answer about giving him treats, and I'd just like to give a few more suggestions.

orange slice - very healthy for them, provides lots of vitamins. up to one slice a week
thawed frozen pea (soak it in hot water until it doens't float anymore and the water has cooled, skin the pea and feed them the insides) - helps prevent constipation. once or twice a week
finely shredded carrots - vitamins and such. once a week
finely shredded cheddar cheese (not sharp) - once a month so as not to cause constipation.

jsut a few suggestions, and the orange slice would be really easy for him to eat because it's a big target, so he can't miss it! :)

I think blind humans are a prime example of how a blind individual can survive perfectly well. Would we put them to sleep because they aren't as perfect as we are? If your fish is eating and is getting around fine, he deserves to live.
