What kind of story plot are you looking for? Mystery? Romance? Sci-Fi? Historical fiction? Fantasy? Certainly, there are plenty of great story plots around out there for each of these categories and then some, but its difficult to answer your question as I don't know precisely what you are looking for.

For mystery, I might go with Agatha Christie, with my personal favorites being "Ten Little Indians" (aka "And Then There Were None" depending upon the edition of the book) (ten strangers are called to a deserted island, and are each murdered in turn), "Ordeal By Innocence" (through a collection of unforeseen events, a person who claims innocence throughout is convicted for murder and sent to prison where he dies. His alibi witness shows up, too late to save his life, but just in time for "action" once he stirs up old memories) and "Curtain" (Hercule Poirot and his assistant Hasting go to Styles in the hopes of being able to prevent a murder.)

For science fiction, take almost any storyline from "The Twilight Zone" or "Outer Limits". Most of these are designed to be in the present or recent past. There isn;t a bad storyline in the entire collection of them. Also highly reccommended would be the Dune series by Frank Herbert.

For fantasy, its hard to beat any of the following lot:
The Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis) (all of them)
The Space Trilogy (C.S. Lewis) including
Out of the Silent Planet
Perelandra
That Hideous Strength
The Dark Is Rising series (Susan Cooper)

I hope that is enough to get you started. If you are looking for completely new ideas, you'll have to come up with those on your own.

Go back to 9-11. There's plenty of room there for a guy who was supposed to be at work in Tower 1, but he was late. Maybe he had a meeting elsewhere. Instead of telling his family he was ok, he ran. You figure out why he ran, whether he thought it out, and if he gets caught.
