it doesnt surprise me that some people have trouble keeping fish healthy, just going by the amount of chemicals they put in the tanks, keep it simple, water, fish, filter, oxygen. i can't understand why i don't have the problems i see in the questions. oh yeah partial water changes every now n then too and a ph check once in a while.

IF there is a short simple answer then yeah, it bugs me too. BUT rarely are the answers so simple. You probably find more "offenders" here because aquarium keeping is a complex subject and those like me that write long replies care about the fish and are hoping to educate a few people that are new to the hobby but also care to get it right. Reading those long answers can be very educational, even if you didn't ask the question.

How about the ammonia question as an example....
What's the point of just telling someone to do a water change? That just fixes the problem for the short term. As soon as they stop doing water changes, it's going to go right back up. Don't you think it would be better to tell them what they might look for to fix the problem that is causing the high ammonia readings???
Yes, simple answer, do a water change today and again tomorrow. What happens 4 days from now when the ammonia is back up where it was before the water change.
Sometimes people don't give all the information, or ask the right question, so the long answers may help them more.
I agree that people depend too much on chemicals and things like that by the way...

In response to your responses. It appears that you have been LUCKY with your fish so far- If all you do is throw some fish in a tank with water and a filter. Or perhaps you have some innate knowledge of the aquatic world that allowed to absorb the chemical workings and fish compatibilities while sleeping. For most of us it is not that easy.
From an educational stand point there is a very good reason for the long answers. We are a generation that does not accept expertise simply on someones word. The infromation we give not only helps the reader but also provides them confidence in our answer.
Our answers are constantly competing with complete idiots. We need the reader to trust us- not take the easy way out or just listen to a moron because that was the answer they wanted to hear.

I've been accused of both "too long" and "too short" and have decided that there's no pleasing everybody. The length of the answer really depends on the question. I try to give a good explanation, then refer 'em to a website with more details. Trouble is, you don't always know the level of expertise of the person asking the question and it's usually safer not to assume they know more than they do - so, it takes longer explanations.
Long answers don't bother me if they educate and stick to the topic. What I can't stand is the people who can only use websites to "copy and paste" three page long answers when only a few sentences are needed to answer the question (and then not even credit their source!).

Question: How do I lower ammonia?
Answer: Short or long. There's lots of ways of doing it,and some people will actually care enough to get involved deeply.
Question: WHY IS MY FISH WHITE?
Answer: Extremely long. And the asker is uneducated and probably should have read up on their fish before they got them.
I think you're an idiot if you aren't excited about a long answer here on yahoo!answers. Then again, that's just my opinion...

no, it doens't annoy me. I am one of the "offenders."
we do this to educate. sometimes there is no simple, short answer. and sometimes we see some way we can help you even more and prevent future problems. it's not like this is in makeup and if we don't point out an error it's no big deal, this fish are living things and if you're doing something wrong it could KILL the fish, so we do everything we can to help you.

In my opinion...If you knew enough about fish to get a short answer, you probably wouldn't be asking the question. So, nope.
Offenders??? What the 'h are you talking about?? People are just trying to lend education.

Not every question can be answered with a simple yes or no. With my questions, I love the long posts, more information the better.

It's impossible to give a decent answer to a difficult question in 25 words or less. You tell 'em Kylie and Demon and Magic!
