I was looking at the iBook G3 500MHz 192mb 10GB CD model : M7698 on dvwearhouse.com and I was wonder after I get it could I go like to a computer store and get it upgrated with a dvd drive and stuff, would they be able to do that or is it to old. It is a terrific deal for a used computer ($229). It would be great to know before I bought it. Could you please answer the same question for the ibook clamshell they have. Can I upgrade it?

Hello mpatt52,

Yes, you could probably still get a replacement DVD drive put into that iBook. However, I wouldn't recommend you buying this.

Apple should be discontinuing G3 support any time now. G4's (like I own) and G5's will be gone soon after. They're using Intel-based Macs now. All of the software developers will be soon converting all of their software to Intel-based. Adobe isn't even converting to Universal Binary and going straight to Intel-only.

Try saving your money a little longer and getting something a little newer. Also you could try buying refurbished Macs instead. They're newer and have a full warranty as a brand new Mac. Check them out here:

On the other hand, if you'd be happy with the same software for awhile, and not upgrading, you'll be able to get quite a bit of work done with cheaper/older software. There's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Best of luck.

Don't listen to them, you CAN upgrade some other things. You can get a bigger hard drive which will make it run faster, and RAM which will do the same. You can even get the newest Operating System for it. More than likely you won't be able to upgrade the processor though. There are some websites dedicated to upgrading older macs. If you find you just want to start fresh, some even let you trade in your older mac for a discount on a newer one. Check it out. just select your computer and they do the rest.

It depend on what you want to upgrade.
You can get a larger hard drive or more memory.
There's not much else available.
Put you money into a cheap $400 ACER or for $600 you can get many laptops.
Of course big power comes in at $1200 to about $5000
Mine was $4600

You usually can't upgrade laptop computers, except to ADD RAM. You will see from http://www.18004memory.com that you can only bring it up to 576 MB of RAM for about $99.00.

Maybe it would not be worth it, since it only has MAC OS9. The whole thing would be TOO DORKY.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
