I find that while my periods are lighter on this pill, they are still quite heavy. I also find it difficult to take the pill at the exact same time every day due to uni, work and another medical reason which makes me sleep alot. I have weaned myself off Zoloft as I suffered from depression last year. Does depo provera stop your periods or will I still keep getting them? Also when in your cycle should you get your first injection?

You can get the shot anytime during your cycle. And yes it does stop your periods completely.

I have a horror story to tell with the shot though, i don't recommend it to anyone. Unless you have a really high metabolism it will most likely make you gain weight, a lot of weight. I gained 20 lbs on the shot. I guess it just makes you crave carbs.. But every month when i was suppost to have my period my stomach would just bloat out so big i couldn't fit into my jeans and i would get severe pain. I even had to go to the doctor for it, but they couldn't do anything for me. It takes 3 months for the shot to wear off.

i also have not gained a terrible amoont of weight. my story is similar to unicorns_77. I started on depo about 13 years ago. i am very bad with pills and this came along. I have periods 4 times a year. usually fairly light, but sometimes they go on and on for over a week.

I have gained a total of 14 pounds over the course of 13 years on it. However, I am not sure if that is the Depo or just me and bad habits. I did actually go down in weight for a bit. I hate exercise and am currently cooking for one. My doctor is not the slightest bit concerned with any weight gain. I have been going to the same doctor for only 9 of these years and while being seen with this doctor have only gained maybe 4 - 5 pounds tops.

The biggest issues for me is decreased bone density and figuring out how long it will take to have a baby, if I chose to do that. It can take up to two years once you stop taking it.

You usually get your first shot during your period...I think...been so long I have forgotten. Your doctor's office should tell you that.

But seriously do not take depo just so you have period help.

Be careful. Not only did Depo cause me to gain about 15 lbs in 3 months but I got horrible mood swings. I had never had a weight problem before and was pretty even-tempered but within one month of the shot I felt like I constantly had PMS, bloating, all my pre-period signs. And even though it's supposed to stop your periods, you still spot throughout the first 3 months at any given time. I'm not trying to scare you , it's just that I never knew all these things could happen and if someone had told me, I never would've gotten the shot. for the record, I use the patch now and I'm very happy with it.

When I turned 18 I used depo provera and would not recommend it! Within 6 months I had put on 15 kilos, my skin got more acne, still had bleeding and worst of all developed dark hairs on my chest and neck areas!! After stopping i lost the weight, skin cleared up, but unfortunately the hair is still growing, meaning i carry tweezers everywhere I go! What it does it tricks you mind into thinking your pregnant so you dont get your period but you get all the symptoms of pregnancy. I wish someone had explained this to me, as your doctor wont.

Ok...everyone else is giving you horror stories.....mine is the exact opposite...I loved being on depo...never gained any weight...no mood swings......no period.....my skin was great...the only real downfall that I found was that I wasn't all that interested in sex....not that I didn't want it at all but wasn't as interested in it as I was before I started depo....I would say talk to your Dr....every thing is different for everyone....

I didnt think it was still on the market! I have heard horrible stories- my sis- in- law was 3 months pregnant with twins before she knew it (on the shot) she lost 1 of them. IS IT NATURAL TO NOT HAVE A PERIOD? I know it sucks but we have them for a reason ladies! Think about that!
