Although this may seem odd to most, it is not really all that uncommon. Most of the time actions such as: thumb sucking, hair twisting or chewing, etc...are based less on the behavior and more on what causes it.

Most people begin such actions at a very young age as a way to deal with some sort of trauma. Such trauma could be as simple as painful teething or as extreme as violence in the household.

For your friend there may be any number of causes for her thumb sucking addiction. In the event that she quits by sheer force of will, that will not mean that she has defeated the internal causes. It will simply manifest in some other way. Considering all the negative ways that it could manifest, the current issues are no big deal. Also, the braces may cure her of it anyway.

Now, if this happens primarily in her sleep, I suggest what another person has already.....put something on her thumbs that will taste bad and keep her from doing it.

Lastly....

If she wants to quit she will. End of story.

wow. im not going to make fun of her becuase i know how she feels. ok i didn't stop sucking my thumb till i was like 10. I went to the dentist and she told me that i really should stop or else i would have big gigantic buck teeth and that totally freaking me out. so i stopped other ways are probably to put pepper or some kind of bad tasting thing on that thumb so when you suck it it'll taste bad and yea.

Sucking a thumb is a nervous and boredom tendency. Tell her to carry a pen with her and when she starts to want to suck her thumb tell her to toy around with the pen instead. Or if she can find something else to carry around that could replace her time.

Everymorning she needs to dip her fingers in rubbing alhcohol and bring some to school. Be sure she applies it after every hand wash so that it is always thier. The taste of rubbing alcohol is so foul she will definatly not want to suck her thumb.
