How do I show that I'm sorry for something I said to my good friend?

I don't remember saying it, but he said that I made a rather hateful comment about his being gay. I really need to know how to show him I'm sorry, and to get him to realize that I didn't mean to say it. I know I would never say this under normal circumstances, but I was heavily intoxicated, and I really am sorry. Someone please tell me how to make him see that I don't hate him.

Take him out for dinner or movies and say sorry that you didnt mean it that way.
