Hello kerrylk15,

On the Macintosh laptops it's the same way. You close the lid, it puts the Mac to sleep. Open the lid and it's instant on for you. This is great for going through airport security. :-)

Closing laptop while it is ON is IMO a good thing. I typically lock the screen and then close the lid. That way nobody will spill some hot coffee by accident for example. But what exactly happens depends on the power settings as well as whether the laptop is operating on power or battery. One word of caution however is that if you are downloading/uploading something and the laptop is running on battery, then you don't want to close it or even leave it unattended for more than couple of minutes. Much depends on the power settings of course. Different laptops have different ways of doing it. On ThinkPads I just click on the battery symbol on the status pane to lauch the settings.

It most cases closing the lid puts the laptop into standby position. Its a low power setting but it isn't turned off so the battery will continue to drain if you aren't connected to the AC adapter.

Yeah, the guys who answered above are correct. Just keep in mind that the battery will continue to drain. When you open it back up, it should be right where you left off...It's actually good for the monitor to rest when not in use.
