How about not even mentioning your opponent. Just say what you would do in office. Compliment your opponent at times. Even say something like, "If the voters elect my oponent they would be well served by him. He is a good person and I respect his ability."
It would need to be true of course, but the candidates would be forced to put forward an agenda, a positive agenda.

That calls for Integrity, Virtue, Ethics, morality and the lest respected of all. RESPONSIBILITY!

Where should any of this come from?

Where do they/we teach this?

Children lie to their parents, cheat on test, and beat up on each other. PARENTS set poor examples and the world at large is the pits!

It should be as you have written. We all have a FREE WILL, therefore we can chose to have it that way!

But, instead, we will chose to lie down with the pigs, grumble in the mud, and blame everyone else!

It will never happen. The Politics of Personal Destruction are as old as this nation, if not older. The Andrew Jackson campaign accused John Quincy Adams of being a pimp. Adams countered by calling Jackson the mulatto son of a prostitute. Abe Lincoln was torn to shreds by political attacks. If anything, it's less vicious now than it was a hundred years ago.

Yup, we'd be able to see some great campaigns. Candidates should worry about focusing on their main isssues and not their opponents. Yeah, defend your issues and compliment your opponents for their ideas is just the best way to have more people show up and vote. Negative ads are for wimps, positive ads are for heroes. Thanks!

It's been proved that 'attack tactics' are the most effective...at least most of the time. And that's not a reflection on anything but just how foolish people are. People would rather see a bloodsport than a respectful and honest debate.

And I figure that hasn't only effected the way they vote... it's also slowly degraded their values, and their integrity.

It's been going on since the beginning of our country. Read about the founding fathers and some of the crap they pulled on each other.
They published terrible lies about their opponents, and often it worked to their advantage. Jefferson had some nasty stuff written about Adams. Jefferson had always been friendly to him and his wife even though they were politically opposed. Adams was a working farmer, Jefferson was wealthy and aristocratic. Adams never forgave him.

It would be GREAT! Doubt if I'll ever see it in my life time.
