The car i have now is 16" wheels. Would it be fine to put a new pair of wheels and rims on it if its a newer model?

As jcad said, they will not fit. BMWs have very specific wheel fitment requirements and even wheels with the 4x100 bolt pattern can be a problem. The offset, and most importantly, the center-bore, are key. Since BMW wheels are hub-centric (meaning they are centered on the hub by the center-bore instead of the lugs), a too large bore could lead to vibration. Here is a great forum that will tell you way more than you probably want to know.

No they will not. The 01 Z3 is a 5 lug bolt pattern while the 89 3 series is a 4x100mm bolt circle. Will not fit.

More likely not......Technology and designs change frequently. Take ameasuring tape and start at one lug nut, measure to the third lugnut(bypassing one lug) and read your measurement. This will give you the lug pattern. Measure it to the new rim and you will be able to tell.
