I have a 99 manual eclipse and I had the car for 4 years now. And it's always been this way....sometimes it won't go into 1st or reverse right away, I have to try it a couple of times till I feel it in gear. I've know other people with 2g eclipses with the same problem. Not sure if that's your problem. Otherwise sounds like your transmission is about to go.
Buy a rebuilt tranny from tre (team rip engineering). They actually put stronger gears in there so should last a long time. If you send your old one back they will discount you.

depends on how much money u have, if money is not a issue take it to someone and get it rebuiltor buy a new one, if u don't have alot of money goto a junk yard and take a tranny there, alot of the times cars are wrecked but it is mainly alot of body damaged so the engine and tranny are still good

If it is a manual, check the clutch. It is probably gone. If it is an automatic, you will probably need an overhaul. Check with a good trans shop or your local dealer.
