What kind of iPod is it?
Have you tried resetting it? To reset it you hold down the menu button and the center button in the middle of the click wheel until it reboots.
I think some of the older iPods you hold down menu and play.

the other way is if you still doesn't get it work normally, then you can try to remove the battery?
if not, then Turn off about 30 second and turn back on wait another 30 second to see what going on?
if both method above still doesn't work, then you have to return to the store or set up the placement under warrantee.

try rebooting it
to reboot it hold the menu button and the center button at the same time for about 7 seconds and it will reboot and work fine!!

try restoring the firmware in i tunes
or restoring it by the restoring software availible at apple website
