I have a 99 manual eclipse and I had the car for 4 years now. And it's always been this way....sometimes it won't go into 1st or reverse right away, I have to try it a couple of times till I feel it in gear. Not sure if that's your problem. Otherwise sounds like your transmission is about to go.
Buy a rebuilt tranny from tre (team rip engineering). They actually put stronger gears in there so should last a long time. If you send your old one back they will discount you.

If the transmission is an automatic and if it has an 'H' stamped onto the casing you must simply throw it away. This particular unit is built by Hyundai and is a piece of crap. Just go buy another one from a salvage yard and install it, (though the total cost will likely exceed the value of your car -- sorry).

i would go to a wreckers and get another tranny , make sure when you do get another get a new clutch / clutch plate so you have a new clutch you will also need a seal for the axle also tranny fluid but im sure you will not be doing it yourself so the cheapest way is to go to the wreckers and change those things , unless you are best friends with a tranny rebuilder lol getting a rebuilt are usually expensive .i have a 97 eclispe =)
