This issue just happened today, It is a cdrw/dvdr combo drive. I can play dvd's with no issues, I put in a cd rom and it says there is no disc in the drive. the laptop is a Gateway i don't know model. I am runnning Windows XP. Thanks in advanced

We tried 2 differant cd roms and 1 music cd, and all 3 did not work. But the one movie we tried did work.

cd's are not scratched, I keep my cd's in new condition. No I'm not looking for a new laptop....... I spent too much for this one to be getting a new one.

Have you tried other cd roms too, to see if they work? Its very possible that disc just doesnt read for some reason. That happens alot, CD's can be weird sometimes

Maybe the cd has a lot of scratches on it so the laptop might not reading it . Try other cd's

THe problem is with the drive. Update its firmware to the latest from the manufacturers website and ur problem will be solved.
