what was the space ship that blew up on take-off. I beleive it was in 1986/7.

You are probably refering to the Challenger space shuttle. It did not explode as most people think but disintegrated shortly after take off on 1/28/86. Click on the following link for the full story:

Apollo 13 had an on-board explosion on it's way to the moon. The astronauts aboard were lucky to make it back alive. The Challenger disaster was probably the one you're thinking of.
