I am currently working toward my Bachelor's degree/ certification in Elementary Education. My long term goal is to do Special Education, but there was a special program for Elelmentary Education (due to the need for more teachers in my city) that I just couldn't pass up due to its affordability, flexible scheduling, (I'm a mom to 3 and I work full time!) and convenient location.

From your experience,

please tell me your opinion: After obtaining my degree/certification in Elementary Education, will it be likely that the district will sent me for certification/ Master's in Special Ed due to their need for more teachers in that specialty, or should I move on to a Special Ed Certification/ Master's program on my own BEFORE entering the workforce as a teacher?

Wow, look at me with my poor grammar! I meant "Send" not "Sent"! It's been a long day!

I'm a teacher in Texas. If we wanted to go into spec. ed., all we have to do is take a test. No need for a master's. You might want to double check on that, since spec. ed. is typically short on teachers.

If not, I would get that regular ed classroom experience first. I think it is a necessary perspective to have, especially working with classroom teachers when you pull their kids. Good luck!

That would depend on the commitment you have made to the school system. If none then go ahead and get special ed degree also. There is a need in both areas so you could be prepared in both area.
