I sell crib mattresses from three companies. Give or take a 1/2 inch, all crib mattresses are 52 x 27. Because of federal guidelines regarding the safetly of juvenile sleeping, companies these days are sticking to standard sizes. Don't fret. It will fit (very snug for sure). Just remember not to put any blankets, stuffed toys or pillows in the crib with the baby.

RE:
What's the average size of a baby's crib mattress?
So I know that the crib I bought in a separate store will work with a mattress that we will get at the baby shower.

I just read that you should test the mattress you plan to buy in your crib to be absolutely sure it fits like it should . This makes sense to me, all manufactured items vary in size

Considering how fat people are nowadays, just get some chicken wire and fence a large circle in your backyard. When the baby doesn't fit inside the circle anymore, buy your neighbor's backyard, rinse, repeat.
