I tried to turn on my laptop and I just got a black screen that says:

Ready for EC/KBC update. Place the EC/KBC update disckette in the drive, and press any key when ready to proceed.

I was told it might be a stuck TAB key. I took the key top off the TAB key and checked by moving up/down if it was stuck. Doesn't seem to be.

I tried rebooting it. I just get the message and a beep every second it is on.

I also tried to remove the tabkey andpress the rubber thingto see if the key was stuck. No change.

Could the problem be that the battery pack was on too long?

I don't know if this might be a similar situation, but it looks like it might be caused by a key sticking. Check your Tab key.

Went to Toshiba website (support) and followed search to this page:

You'v already tried to un-stick the Tab key, so, before you ship it off to be serviced, try one more thing-flash the BIOS.
You will need access to a computer running Windows, a blank (or one that you don't care about the contents) floppy disk, and access to the following site:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=120213&moid=1073769805&BV_SessionID=@@@@1859353221.1173199428@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchaddkgejflejcgfkceghdgngdgmm.0&ct=DL

Once you are in Windows, insert the floppy disk. Go into "My Computer", right click the floppy (A) drive, and choose format. Select quick format, let it run (You don't have to name the disk or include system files). Once that is completed, download from the link above the self-extracting zip file; save to desktop. Once you have extracted the zip, run it and it will create a bootable floppy for you. If you don't HAVE a floppy drive on the laptop, you can always create a bootable CD and put the files on that...

Give it a shot-the worst it can cost you is some time.
