I have lots and lots of favorite singers. But Gavin DeGraw is my inspirational one. His song "I Don't Wanna Be" always inspires me to write my own song. And I can't do it everytime I try. Please give me tips. I really want to write a killer song.

You don't really write a song...

The song comes to you. What you do is write down notes and words. If you don't like it...

Edit until you think it's right then add in things to give it the feel of a song not a piece of music. (believe me, there IS a difference)

different lyricists have a different way of writing.. some sit down for hours thinking about a specific topic, and using the ol trial n error method to write a song.... some go woth the flow....
writing a song is an art which comes naturally from within... you can't really learn how to compose songs....
when i feel strongly about something, i express my feelings in a poetic form, then make a few changes in it to make it a complete song.... i don't recall how it all started, but now, i'm quite passionate about writing songs.... i generally take 20-25 minutes to write a song, and i've full 14 songs to my credit...
u need to feel it within you... once you get the feelin, u can start writin!!!!
Good Luck!!!!

being a lyricist, i usually just sit down, take some deep breaths, clear my mind and put the pen to the pad. oh, and don't force yourself it's gotta be natural.
