When you first become a teacher, is there some tendency (available position depending of course!) to place teachers in a position close in proximity to the section of the city that they live in, or do the newbies automatically get assigned to the least desirable schools?

LOL
It's not the idea of the "bad" schools that scare me. Kids are kids. Besides I lived in one of those "bad" neighborhoods for 6 years when we first came to this city. There were some very sweet children there, and I look forward to the challenge of pushing them to succeed in life! I was more concerned about the longer commute to the inner city than anything!
Thanks for the input so far!

Monica, they do not consider where you live. You will be assigned to a school that needs your position and grade level. You will not necessarily be assigned to a least desirable school. And if you are, know that you can ask for a transfer at the end of the year to another school you would like and is closer to your home. Good luck in your profession.... teachers are gems in society !! You go, girl !!

Well unless you have some sort of connection you will be low man on the totem pole. You will more than likely be placed where ever they need you. The more seniority you have the better chance you get to move to a more desirable school. So you may have to teach in an area that is not your first choice, but after being in the district for some time you will have more pull and be able to move to a better school. Good luck!

Monica - it doesn't matter where you teach - whether you are in a large urban area, a suburb, and/or a rural area - the new teacher are usually going to get the less desireable jobs.

Good Luck!!!

In New York, you can apply to any school. You are not assigned unless you came in through a special recruiting program, in which you might have given up your right to choose where to teach in exchange for free or accelerated training.

hate to say it...but districts vary on this philosophy...and most go with putting you in the "crappy school" with "bad kids." but some teachers would argue there are no crappy schools or bad kids. those teachers are....very special and i'm glad they are here, but i think we all know that this particular schools and kids are a bit more challenging...but they can also be very rewarding.

As experienced teachers are promoted out of or transfer out of the less desirable schools, most new teachers are sent to the less desirable schools as they are logically harder to staff, and have the vacancies.
