China's government is totalitarian, but the economy is virtually free-market at this point.

If the government suddenly decides to start seizing assets, their competitiveness would start fading withing a few years.

you're right about China being totalitarian, but you're wrong about China being communist.

yes, I know, China still pretends to be a communist country.

well that's a laugh! It is most definitely NOT communist.

China is as capitalist as they come!

They privatized nearly everything.
China has no public education, no public health care, no social safety nets. You have to pay for everything.

China is a far more capitalist country than the United States is.

And totalitarianism and capitalism are not at all mutually exclusive.

Just look at Chile under Pinochet. Just look at Russia today.

They have an interesting mixture of communism and private industrialization. Though much of the country functions under old style communism-such as farming, other areas-such as manufacturing are free-market based.

Many past farming inhabitants are now working in the cities and sending money home to the farmers who cannot make any extra money.

although china boasts off as being communist, they have let go of many of their former socialist rules. it started when their leaders, such as deng siao ping and hua guofeng, ventured into a more liberalized economic system. they, little by little, opened their doors to other foreign economies. (they still labeled these loberal changes as socialist, though)
right now, with them joining the WTO and their massive labor force, they are able to compete, and even lead the race, against other foreign economies.

Good question. China is in the middle of a historic transition. Her left leg(the economy) has fully recovered from the illness called communism. In another word, its already a free market economy, btw, it's the one of the world's largest. Her right leg (government) is still a communist government. It may take us 50 yrs to cure it. So in the 2050's, we will see her standing up as a free market democracy. According US analyst, she will become one of the strongest nations in the world. It simply takes much longer time to cure her right leg. Sorry, I myself don't know why.

The government can dictate that there will be cheap labor, cheap money, and whatever else it takes to be economically competitive. They don't have OSHA, Affirmative action, labor unions, etc.

They have a huge supply of labor. The government can plow money back into companies, if they so desire, in an effort to make those companies more competitive.

China has cheap labor, vast resources, and a lot of man power. Also, they're not that communist. When it comes down to it, very few "communist" countries are nowadays.
