Take cosmetology and art classes. Cosmetology will teach you how to create a variety visual effects through makeup, how lighting affects a person's features, etc. Bruising, body injury and even some of the scary effects are also created through the use of skillfully designed masks and prosthetics. Makeup artists must be able to work with a wide variety of materials including plastics, rubber, foam, latex and other silicon to make the desired special effects happen. If you are really ambitious you can learn about animatronics. That would be used for, say, a two-headed monster (making the 2nd head blink, move, etc on it's own).
