I am a very commited player with alot of music experience(flute, piano, clarinet, violin). I play the violin actively with lessons. The other instruments I didnt quit but i just dont take lessons. I own an acoustic beginner fender squier guitar. Would it be fairly easy to learn guitar with music knowledge already? I am used to having to press on the strings for sound except the violin dosent have frets. Would it be easy to teach myself? Are DVD's the best? My dream is to play electric.

note: Practice time is NOT an issue. I willingly spend hours a day practicing violin and enjoy it.

Yes, it would be easy, providing you've been playing your other instruments for long enough. I've been playing the violin for 10 years and started teaching myself guitar through books 2 years ago. I found it easy, but I gave up because I got fed up because of the limited stuff I could play. Also, my hands were too small for the neck and the strings were further apart than I'm used to, so it was frustrating!

The frets on a guitar make it easy because it requires less precision than with the violin. I learned fine with the right books. DVD's sound even better, if you can get hold of any. But with experience of playing a stringed instrument, the chances are you won't have a problem with the learning part :)

Guitar lessons are pretty cheap. I would recommend lessons because you learn the proper techniques early on instead of having to stumble onto them. If you have an ear for music, you will pick it up quickly, but quicker with an instructor.
Guitar is a wonderful instrument that you will enjoy the rest of your life.

It will be easier then someone with no musical experiance at all. You all ready understand the idea of holding strings down but the instruments are still quite different.

You have an edge in knowledge but not in the technique.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMD1R It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

Yes, with all the music education you had, it would be easy to pick up guitar. All you need is a good guitar book or 2. If you can get DVD's that is good too.
