Most women will bleed for 2-6 weeks after having a baby. At first the bleeding is very heavy, but it gets lighter over time. Often, women will have several days or weeks of "bleeding" that is more light to dark brown, as opposed to red.

If you are not breastfeeding, normal menstrual cycles should resume 6-12 weeks after you give birth. But "normal" may be different from what it was before the baby. Some women have shorter or longer cycles, different PMS symptoms, and different number of bleeding days during their periods. And your cycles may not be regular right away (i.e., you may get a cycle when your baby is 8 weeks, but not have another one until baby is 18 weeks).

If you breastfeed exculsively (no bottles/pacifiers), you will likely have at least 6 months without periods. Some women do not have periods until several months after the baby weans. Others have their first period while baby is still nursing. As with moms who don't breastfeed, breastfeeding moms often have irregular cycles.

If you are breast feeding, your period can be irregular until you stop. Once i weaned my children my period returned to normal within a few months. Every person is different when it comes to how long you bleed after giving birth. With one child, I bled for about 10 days, but with my last child, I bled for over 6 weeks. If you have concerns speak with your doctor.

I really can not remember how long I bleed for maybe 2 weeks a week and a half....(Could be wrong I really dont remeber ~I am sure everyone is different) I have not gotten a reg. period yet I have been breastfeeding my son for 9mths and had a "period" once and it lasted for 2 days. But I think moms who don't BFeed will get their period right away....

you bleed for a few weeks. period should be normal after a month or two. And did anybody tell you, you will still have contractions after the baby is born for a few weeks also.

after i had my son i bled for about 3-4 days. My period returned like normal the following month. You must remember that every woman is different and so are menstrual cycles.
