That depends. Not everyone has a right to own or use a fire-arm. Criminals and convicted felons are not permited to use fire-arms even in clear cases of self-defense.
Some fire-arms are better than others for the purpose of self-defense. You have to consider range, weight, ease of use, and the ease and accuracy of firing. If you can't use it, it's no good for defense. Hand guns are better in close contact just because of handling. Rifles are better for distance shooting. But, if it's at a distance then you probably have other means of defense. Shot-guns are great for close shots. But you have handling issues with shot guns much as you do with rifles. Also consider the caliber. You want stopping power without excessive risk to others. If you shoot a guy and the projectile, bullet, goes through him and the wall behind him, then you are responsible for anyone or anything else hit behind the wall. If you use too small of a bullet/load combination, then you just injure the attacker and make him angry.
As for legality, that depends very much upon the where, when, how, and why of the situation. Laws vary by quit a lot from one state to another. Some states have provisions for self-defense. Some have concealed weapons laws. Some don't allow for self-defense. You have to know about the local laws. That goes for fire-arms as well.
By the way, primative fire-arms or black powder weapons are not good for self-defense. It is unsafe to keep them loaded. You don't have time to load and use them in an emergency. But they do have the stopping power.
Good luck!

A gun can be used in self-defense, yet you need to know the state rules on when and where you can do this legally. Can you carry it on you outside your home? What does the person need to be doing to in order to fire the gun.

A gun is simply a tool, and should be your tool of last resort in a life-threatening situation. To properly equip yourself for self-defense, you need a whole range of other tools. These include awareness of your surroundings, the wisdom to stay away from dangerous places, the ability to safely retreat, verbal judo, among others.
If you feel you are responsible enough to carry a firearm, then I suggest you acquire one, take the required courses and then train yourself in the other arts of self-defense along with your regular gun training. The best reason to carry a firearm is so that criminals are more hesitant to commit crimes. If they don't know who's armed, then we're all that much safer. And for those who don't carry weapons, you're welcome.

That's a very good question. Oh, if only our founding fathers had actually been much more clear about the second amendment. I would say that a small handgun is proper for self-defense, but no more should be necessary. Any more than that is clearly overkill in my opinion.

In the event you are in a life/death situation...yes.but if it looks at all as if you purchased a gun to shoot the first person who called you a nasty name..the judge will call it assault with a deadly weapon, or attempted murder. Law is a tricky buisiness, don't wage your life on the power or security a firearm may provide. Legal, yes..good idea to hand the scared rabbit a pistol when the Wolf is out trying to play with it's family? No.

Well, it all depends on what for and the legality of what is 'self-defense'
In your home you are aloud to shoot anyone; ONLY in your home. Unless you have a ccp. You are only aloud to shoot if your or anothers life is endanger. If you ever do shoot someone remember these words to say to the police:
"I feared for my life, I will say more after I have rested" - then speak with your lawyer and have him fill you in on what to say. Do not talk to the police. This is key.
A shotgun is the best weapon for home protection, it does not over penetrate through walls, it also makes a good noise to scare intruders. If I bought 1 weapon for protection the shotgun would be it.
Another good gun for protection, if a pistol is your choice, is any pistol in .45acp. .45 acps are very large, slow bullets and they have low penetration and pack a large punch. SWAT uses them for this reason.
If you shoot someone, a criminal(lets hope) remember this aswell; drop your gun on the ground- when the police arrive they would prefer to have non-officers not armed. this may be better for your safety aswell.

Only if you know how to use it, keep it unloaded, and out of the reach of children. Otherwise a baseball bat can be just as effective and it doesn't take three week background checks to buy.

NO.
AND YES IF YOU MEET THE EST LOCAL LAWS FOR THAT FIREARM AND ITS USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH EST LAW FOR THAT FIREARM
EACH CASE IS AN INDIVIDUAL CASE......
POLICE DON'T LUMP ALL INTO A BASKET...
ONE PERSON MIGHT USE FIREARM AND NOT BE CHARGE BUT YET ANOTHER PERSON USES FIREARM AND GETS CHARGED.
SAME EVENTS TAKES PLACE BUT OFFICER OR DA VIEWS CASE IN DIFFERENT MANNER.
USE OF A FIREARM IS LOOKED AT VERY CLOSELY....
