Charcoal, or carbon, is basically used for the chemical filtration process. It is very poor for the mechanical and bacterial filtration processes. Chemical filtration removes harmul gases from the water when it passes over the carbon. Of the three forms of filtration, chemical filtration is the least neccesary. The carbon, usually in a packet of some sort, is put inside the filter casing, such as in a canister filter.
