There are numerous hardware variations of the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive available today. Any of the officially licensed hardware should be good.
That's the advantage of cart-based consoles with all solid-state electronics - they tend to be more hearty than modern consoles with optical media drives and hard disks.
Even some of the pirated hardware is pretty good, though you run the risk of getting the occasional incompatible system. Considering how inexpensive an official Sega Genesis / Mega Drive is, it doesn't make sense to get a pirate console.
There's also portable version called the Sega Nomad. They can be a little hard to find, but are nice consoles. They play all Sega Genesis games (though not 32X), can be hooked up to most any NTSC television, and has a port for a second controller. The screen is very good, though it eats batteries quickly. While it's not a suitable replacement for a regular Sega Genesis consoles, It's fun portable novelty, if you can find it.
There are also some officially licensed Sega Genesis / Mega Drive consoles with the Sega CD built in. They're cheap, and let you play some of the really cool Sega CD games that are out there including the Lunar games, Snatcher and Policenauts.

I have every model of genesis that was ever released, so I might be able to help you here.
My favourite is the larger one, as it had the headphone jack at the front. And the games were more secured in the top of the machine. They probably enter the machine about 50% than they did on the genesis 2. The original is slightly cheaper as it's older.
Road Rash 2 was my favourite as well as Road rash 3. If you liked those you may like Skitchin =)
If you can find it, Ultimate mortal kombat 3 was the best of them.
Virtua Racing was my favourite racing game. Followed closely by F1 Championship edition.
Lemmings was brilliant on the Genesis for a bit of puzzle fun =)

Recommend emulators or emulation you can find it in www.freeroms.com all kinds of emulator like sega, SNES, and atari are there.
Recommend Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Cyborg Justice, Road Rash 2 and 3 they're good. Arcus Oddysey, Skitchin (like road rash but you race with rollerblades) Shining Force, Shinobi series, Warsong, Buck Rodgers, Toe Jam and Earl Panic in Funkotron, and many more.

Game recommendations- Earth Worm Jim 2. Fun. Fun. Fun!!! While you're at it- see if you can find a NOMAD; its the thing that lets you take your genesis games anywhere- sort of like a gameboy or psp. It's amazing.
