Bras were meant to initially to be worn by `rich` ladies who had maids to dress them. Poorer women could not afford such a luxury item of underwear. Even when they became universally worn by women they continued to be made in the same style. In the 1960`s the `wonderbra` came out and they were originally front fastening. Apart from one or two styles most front fastening bras are for `larger` ladies. The theory is that with a back fastener bras can be made to give a better shape to a woman , than if they were fastened at the front.

I think it's so that the front can be all one piece in the best design to give the best support. I used to have one that did up in the front and it was too flimsy. It does seem like they should have come up with a much better design... My question - why are the bands only available in even sizes - that's ridiulous. I'm a 35, NOT a 34 or a 36. Is it too much to ask? Bras are not logical - is it too much to ask that they should be?

well, not all bras are like that. They can be in the back or front. It eather depends on the brand...or just what type of bra. For example: Most sports bras do up at the back. Try shopping at victoria secret, target or, wal-mart for a bra that does up in the front.

they are not supposed to go up at the back, it means you are wearing the wrong size bra.

Get yourself measured and fitted, worth every penny...

sorry just realised you said do up, not go up>>>>>silly me,

I imagine it's to give more leeway in measurements. Like most bra's have two or three set of hooks. Also as a bra ages, the elasticity loosens, so you would need a tighter fit.
And to give more comfort if your breast swell at your period, and stuff like that

Some bras on the market now do up at the front between your cleavage - much easier! And easier to for your fella to whip off too! ;-)

I don't know about all these other answers but my guess is that the do up at the back because some bloke invented them. He didn't have a clue. Good job they make front fastening ones nowadays.

It means your band is too big. So if you wear a 34C and it fits ok on the cups but the band is too big, you'd need a 32D or 32DD. When the band goes down, the cup size goes up 1 or 2 depending on the brand.

HTH : )
