The liberals might give them enough votes to win the democratic nomination, but then the democrats might have an unelectable candidate. If a candidate appears to be a liberal both the conservatives and the moderates will vote aginst him.

You make a good point, you can't be all the way to the left, or all the way to the right to be a good leader. You have to be a moderate democrat/republican because most of the country is that way now-in-days. Even though they're democrats, I think that Guliani or McCain will be the president, not because we aren't ready for a black or a female president, but because they would probably present themselves better, and have a better track record than the other 2. Hillary will be judged because of her husband, and the fact that she did vote to go into Iraq. Obama will have a lot of supporters, but might lose because he has very little political experience. Rudy has 9/11 to fall back on, but all the other stuff like his divorce, and his past'll haunt him. McCain might be the best choice because of his war record, and the fact that he is a middle of the road-type republican. He's made an appearance on SNL, and is probably one of the better choices. But that's just my opinion, I'm not into politics.

I think with the national sentiment toward the tremendous mess the Republican party has us in, both domestically and internationally, McCain would be the only Republican that stands a chance.

I don't know about your assumption, but I doubt either of them can win against any of the strong Republicans.
