technically speaking- most people consider their race to be part of their identity. I think race, in any sense more than you saying "I came from.." is a label that further promotes seperation between people. I don't need people to point out that I'm "caucasian," but if someone wants to know where my family is from then I have no problem saying I'm German. Just like people are Japanese, African, or American.

This is why I have learned to avoid the term "African-American" unless someone asks me to use it. (I think of it as like calling someone "Joe" like he asked, instead of insisting on "Joseph.") These people were all different from what "African-American" describes--a descendant of African slaves with mixed ancestry born in America--and they are all proud of their own heritage, and probably resent having people ignore it. Which isn't to say that they have the right to put anyone else down, or that they were right to be rude to you.

Because what they told you is a known fact and you did insult them. Further, African-Americans are insulted when you call us an African. For your sake, I would highly recommend you do a little study on this because some aren't very nice when you mistakenly refer to them as a race they're not.

All blacks look alike, whites look alike, Asians, look alike, etc.

Black and African Americans are different.
Blacks are descendant of African slaves in the U.S.
African Americans are Africans with citizenship.

i think they were being silly. it's obvious you were trying to be considerate and there was no reason or sense in blasting you for not addressing five different people by five different nationalities if you were not aware that they were those nationalities except to make themselves feel better than you because you could not read their minds. next time, call them "mortals"-see how they argue with THAT

from what i understood from u, it seems that they are darker than u and u thought they are black! but they are actually not black and not originally from africa...they are from different non-african ethnic groups. they were probably offended bcoz u thought they are all the same bcoz they are darker. it's like thinking that all asians, regardless if they're chinese, japanese, etc...look alike.

they were probably offended that you assumed that they were all black...when you refer to people as a race that they are not they will most likely correct you.
