Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. His birth record listed him as Michael. He graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1948. In 1951, he graduated form Crozer Theological Seminarty in Chester, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. He also received a Ph.D. in Systematic theology from Boston University in 1955.
On June 18, 1953, Martin Luther King married Coretta Scott. Martin’s father performed the wedding ceremony in Marion, Alabama. The ceremony took place in Coretta’s parent’s house. Martin and Coretta had 4 children. Yolanda Denise was born in 1955, Martin Luther III was born in 1957, Dexter Scott was born in 1961 and the youngest was Bernice Albertine. She was born in 1963.
In 1953, at the age of 24, Martin became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. This is when he started his civil right movements. On November 27, 1955 he hosted a speech in Montgomery where T.R.M. Howard addressed the recent Mississippi murders of blacks. The speech that Howard gave a lady by the name of Rosa Parks was there in the audience. 4 days after the speech she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Then the Montgomery Bus Boycott was formed and led by Martin Luther King. The boycott lasted for 382 days. The protest got so tense that Martin Luther King’s house got bombed. During this boycott, King was arrested. On his mug shot, that someone found in July, 2004, the picture had been written on with the words “DEAD”. It also had the date 4-4-68. Because of the arrest the United State Supreme Court decided outlawing racial segregation on bus lines and all public transportation.
In 1957, Martin founded the SCLC, which stands for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was derived from black communities that were associated with the Baptist churches. King was a nonviolent civil disobedience leader.
King attempted several time to do a march from Selma, Alabama to Washington, D.C. The march failed several times but on March 25, 1965 the march finally happened and when he got to Washington where he gave his famous, “I have a Dream speech.”
On April 4, 1968 King was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray. He got shot in the throat and was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital at 7:05 pm. The death of Martin Luther King started a multitude of riots in more than 60 cities. 5 days after his death, Lyndon B. Johnson declared a national day of mourning for the civil right leader. There were 300,000 people that attended his funeral.
Martin Luther King’s memory still lives. In 1983, Ronald Reagan signed a bill that King now has a holiday to honor him on his birthday. King is also put into a statue above the Great West door of the Westminster Abbey, London. King also has many streets to honor him. Martin Luther King will never be forgotten and his legacy will forever live on. Thanks to him we now have more freedom than ever before.

Because he preached tolerance and compassion for everybody, not just colored people. His compassionate speeches for healing were a rebuke to Malcolm X's and the Black Panthers, who preached violence, hatred, and revenge.
