Polygamy is the term for having multiple wives. It is not limited to Mormons. In some Muslim countries men have multiple wives. Usually this is done only when the man can support both wives. Is it fair to the woman? Not really, but in some cultures it is considered acceptable. (I ask myself, what man would want the drama of multiple women?)

People who have multiple spouses at the same time are called polygamists, and yes at one time this was practiced widely amongst Mormons, but since it illegal they have for the most part abandoned that practice.
There are still a couple of groups which practice it legal or not.

Polygamists.

To be Mormon is to follow the Mormon religion. The vast majority of Mormon culture no longer practices polygamy, especially since there are strict laws forbidding it. However, there are some that still do.

And you don't need to be Mormon to be a polygamist. There are many people who keep multiple partners/spouses and have never even been religious.

Yes, in the early days of traditional mormonism there was polygamy.

Now standard Latter Day Saints Mormonism rejects polygamy.

Personally I think anyone who has a wife (one), is lucky.

People(most likely men) who have multiple wives are called bigamists, felons, and at the very least inconsiderate.
