The best thing you can do for your nails is eat a well balanced diet. It is possible if your nails are weak or brittle that you may have a vitamin deficiency of some sort. Although, there are certain cases where weak nails and/or hair are a genetic factor. If you have ruled that out, I would then try a simple multi-vitamin/mineral and increase the amount of green vegetables you eat.
If your willing to spend the money, you can get a clear coat strengthening solution from almost any beauty salon that works with nails.
Also if you find your nails are breaking or tearing you may just try filing them a bit rounder than you usually do. Make sure you get a quality nail file because cheap nail files are notorious for damaging fingernails by splitting them.

As much as we all want to believe that there is some magic solution, there really isn't. You can do things like always moisturize after you wash your hands, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands when you wash dishes or clean the house, eat a good diet...but it's largely genetic so what you've got is how it's going to be.
Gelatin won't work, it doesn't end up in your nails. Calcium is good to have in your diet, but it won't help your nails (and those white spots on your nails aren't calcium deposits, they're actually the result of some trauma to your nail, possibly even while it was being formed). Fruits and vegetables, also good in your diet, but won't make your nails stronger. Commercial products are only temporary - they'll strengthen your nails by adding another coat of thickness to them, but as soon as you remove it, your nails are back to what they were before.
Believe me, I'd like to think there is some sort of magic pill, and I've got a drawer full of products, but believe me, none of it does any sort of permanent job.

I heard calcium is good for nails :) apparently the white marks that show up on them are when your body does not get enough, so make sure you get plenty of calcium if you don't want to buy any of the bottles that you apply directly to help your nail (they do work nice though and are only a few bucks :) )

What has worked, for me, in the past is gelatin. It makes your hair and nails both very healthy and strong.
I would suggest making up a batch and just eating some everyday. The results will be nice nails (and hair, of coarse).
Best of luck!
p.s. If you don't like jell-o, you can buy Knox Gelatin, which is unflavored. Try mixing it in with some yogurt and consuming if that way.

The supplement zinc is supposed to strengthen your nails. You can usually find it with the vitamins at the store. I don't think it costs very much. There's also a brush on product, Hard As Nails. I've used it, and didn't notice much improvement.

Drink lots of milk. I have strong and awesome nails that never break. It's all because of the milk that i drink. If you want to strengthen your nails then you need more calcium in your diet.

There are vitamins available made special for hair and nails.
If you want to use a topical treatment, use Sally Hansen's hard as nails.

You can strengthen your nails by going to a nail salon, and asking for a location that sells nail polish that expecially strengthens nails, i got my nail strengthener from wal mart, so its not hard to find

My dear mother always thought gelatin would do the trick. Try this and other good food before you try chemical solutions....sometimes they do more harm than good. Best of luck!
