It is a small goldfish, a normal 2 inch variety. It was near dead, then we changed the water and it started breathing. Now, it can breath, but it breathes floating at the top! It tries to go back down and straighten itself, but then it starts floating again! Before we changed the water, my mom stuck 8 of them in a container big enough to hold one, and I got so mad I could have hurt someone....grrrr.....Maybe it hurt on of its fins? HELP!?

He's much better now...
Yeah, I wanted to get a tank that big, but so far we're doing daily water changes (100% till we get a tank) and in the market for the equipment.

Eight goldfish!?! Do you have an 80 gallon tank? I hope so. But, I doubt it. This is why your fish is having a hard time with things. It's sick from toxic water due to overcrowding. And the rest of them are going to soon follow. You didn't say what size tank you have, but the rule is 10 gallons of water minimum per goldfish up to 3 inches, and it gets even more than that the larger they get. You have to take back or give away most of these fish or they all will die. I can't even begin to tell you what to do with such an overcrowded situation. It would almost be pointless with so many fish. You are going to need to do daily water changes of about 60% until you get this situation straightened out. Don't scrub the tank or plants or gravel. Leave them as they are, but siphon all the gunk out of the gravel. If you don't have a siphon, you can use a turkey baster. They need the beneficial bacteria that is desperately trying to grow there. Just take out at least half the water and put new in that you have added AmQuel to to reduce stress, take out the chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. And your fish desperately need a filter. This is why they're gasping for air at the surface. They're suffocating from lack of oxygen. A filter also removes some of the toxic chemicals from the water. Your fish has swim bladder disease. Maybe from overfeeding, maybe from gulping too much air at the surface. Get them a good filter and don't feed them for 3 days, then feed them thawed, frozen peas with the skins removed. Please do some reading on how to take care of goldfish. They are a very difficult fish, not easy like what we have been led to believe.

Be sure you're not over feeding them. We got my children goldfish for Christmas and over feeding them makes 'em sick. Also check the water. Be sure to put in a neutralizing agent that helps with the chlorine. If you don't have a heater in the tank you may wanna pick one up at Wal-Mart. Some fish can't adapt to cold water.

No, I am afraid that the goldfish will probably die sometime soon. They tend to have trouble swimming properly when they are dying.

This may sound silly but try giving it peas (drop them in the tank and hopefully he will eat them). Give him defrosted peas, not the canned kind.
Good luck!

It will probably die soon. But call a pet/fish store. And ask them if it is treatable. If you are going to save it, time is important.

its dying.struggling to hold on to life it clings to the hope you will save it.darkness embraces it as exhaustion takes over.the dark hand of death is upon it.fleeting memories of bygone days wisk through its head.a gasp for breath.a tear of sorrow shed unseen in his watery grave.a life so beautiful,so fragile, now lost.
i suggest you flush it before it stinks.
