If you are doing research for your mid-term I suggest you take a lot at the following book from the library because it will definitely help, along with the answers here (it adds credibilty too).

The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman, I think it was part of the second chapter that specifically dealt with Microsoft.

Bill Gates and Microsoft's influence can be separated, mainly because of his post-Microsoft CEO days focused on philanthropy.

Microsoft created the Operating System that IBM accepted (MS-DOS), making it easier for the IBM-compatible PC to flourish because of a standard being established and other companies being able to create compatible software.

Essentially Microsoft made the IBM compatible PC ubiquitous by simplifying eas of use. Microsoft doesn't manufacture hardware, it is a software company.

I think it has been even more influential because of the light brought on business practices - predatory and otherwise. Microsoft became the big dog and was not afraid to bite anyone that tried to come on its turf - suing companies into bankruptcy when they weren't gobbled up, facing competition from software being included with the Operating system (Internet Explorer vs. Netscape), even being willing to fight the Govt. and win.

Bill Gates' influence revolve around how to be a self-made success, how to best capitalize on a near-monopoly situation and most importantly, not being the evil rich person who is selfish but instead creating a fund with the largest endowments in history to focus on tackling the World's greatest humanitarian problems, namely eradicating certain diseases from Africa.

Gave the American Dream a shot in the arm, Gates is new money, not part of the old elitist power structure that dominates world economics and world politics. He is what working stiffs like the blogbaba have as a role model. He represents hope for anyone who aspires to be a selfmade man/woman.
