If by computer you mean a MECHANICAL machine that can perform mathematical functions, then two early examples that I often use are the Babbage difference engine (conceived in the mid 1700s, but not built until the mid 1850s), and the Hollerith tabulation machine (1890s+).

If by computer you mean an ELECTRONIC machine then I'd go with the Atanasoff-Berry built in 1937-42. If this is for a class I hope you get some extra points because few people know of this one.

The ENIAC was an early digital machine, but they didn't even start building it until 1943, and it wasn't complete until 1946.

In the strictest sense, the very first computer was the abacus, a calculating devise used by ancient Chineses and Romans. Many people in Asian countries still use it
