I just discovered Bare Minerals (escentuals) and I am IN LOVE. My daughters are only 6 and 4 but I am already thinking about how THIS will be the only makeup I let them use. It is pretty close to perfection. Good for your skin---no chemicals or "****" (mineral oil, etc. that is in soooo many liquid foundations---and I'm not talking 'bout the cheap ones either.) The coolest part about this makeup is that it does not "look" like you're wearing makeup (unless you want to play up your eyes etc.) But as far as the "foundation" part goes.... it looks totally natural and so you just appear to have this beautiful GLOWING skin. I cannot say enough about it, and I've tried numerous foundations---from Bobbi Brown, to Chanel, to Laura Mercier.... the list goes on and on. NEVER thought this "powder" stuff would do anything for my very less than perfect skin---but I swear by it. It even passes the car-mirror test (can't hide anything there in natural light) which no other foundation ever could do.
If you're just starting out with makeup---go this route. I wish it had been around when I was starting out---I could have looked this good as a teenager! LOL

I think its good to gradually increase your makeup drawer and skills Don't expect to become a makeup artist over night. It can be a great idea to do the whole mall makeover thing, but if that intimidates you you can try other things. Before buying a makeup, I like to look at the reviews at http://www.makeupalley.com
Also, are you sure you need more? I know so many people with beautiful, only slightly blemished skin that still look great with very little makeup (I unfortunately need a truck load to look presentable.) Also, some beauty school will give lessons to the public. I think the Ogle School in Dallas does it.
Start simple and use brushes. They can make the difference between a fake look and a natural one. I'll admit to only recently discovering a concealer brush and I now use it ever day. Also remember that less is more. Don't worry if you aren't perfect, no one is, not even models. I once saw a spread in Jane where they actually showed a model in a shoot with the photo before it was doctored and after. Even with models and professional makeup artists, they needed to airbrush.
Good Luck with your new look!!!

Try multi-function products. I can't think of any off-hand, but sephora.com, my favorite place on earth has tons of great brands that have products you can use on your lips/eyes/cheeks, etc. Benefit, a brand on there, has some really innovative products.
To look your best and like you have *some* makeup, always curl your lashes, put on mascara, and use a lipgloss. You'll look polished but not like you're trying too hard. if you have a bit more time sweep on a pretty pink or peach blush and you're good to go. Too much makeup looks bad anyway, trust me.

I say go to Mac cosmetics and talk with them there. They can help you find what works for you. You can also go to a Clinique and Estee Lauder counters and talk with their girls there and they also willingly will help you find what you like. Talk with someone who wears their makeup simluar to what you want. You can even go more than once and talk with different girls and get some great ideas.

Definitely go with Bare Minerals foundation, it's quick and is all natural so it won't clog pores and it works with your skin.
For mascara i use covergirl lash exact, it never clumps.
Eyeliner is different on everyone, depending on how much your eyes water and how sensitive you are, so just test them out.
And maybeline and neutrogena make lovely products as well.

go over to your friends hosues and see what they use, play around with it. Just have fun. I highly reccomend not trying MAC or going to Sephora your first time around. Its great, addicting, and very expensive. If you can find somethign that works for you, and doesnt add up to hundreds of dollars. Do that first! lol
