It's an idea with deep roots -- remember the "white man's burden." It was an idea during british colonial days that justified any subjugation or exploitation of any non-caucasian people because the british were supposedly "civilizing the heathens/barbarians."
Not crazy, just old fashioned. There're still people around who believe that a woman's place is barefoot and pregnant in the home and hold any number of racial stereo-types.
If you really care about what these @$$holes think, you can respond by pointing out that most of Africa's modern famines (especially in East Africa) are a result of European agricultural policies instituted during colonial times...with help from the peace corps since then. The same goes for poverty and much of the HIV problem -- Africa's got huge natural resource wealth, but the majority of the population sees none of that wealth because the governments are controlled by foreign powers (either governments and corporations) who take all of the wealth out of Africa for themselves. A huge part of the HIV problem is migrant workers who are paid miserable wages, probably by some foreign-controlled multi-national. They have sex with prostitutes while they're away, or their wives need to prostitute themselves for money to survive (there's nothing blameworthy for africans in this -- human nature is pretty universal) and the disease spreads.
In the end, though, when you're faced with this sort of thing it's probably better to just roll your eyes up to the heavens, say a little prayer for humanity, and get on with life.

Thankful? That's an odd choice of words. I wouldn't expect African-Americans to be thankful, but I don't think they should be especially bitter either. They weren't the first nor the last in the world to be enslaved. I'm not saying it was right, but in the history of the world, it wasn't exactly uncommon. Indians (not native Americans) were actually brought to Africa as slaves. Never quite figured that one out. And Columbus brought native Cubans back to Spain. Nowadays, human trafficing from Asia and Central America is the norm. Don't get me wrong, I think slavery is a terrible stain on our history, but I know for a fact there are many in Africa who feel African-Americans are the lucky ones. I don't think they should be thankful, why should they be, I certainly wouldn't be. But it could have been worse and it was native Africans that enslaved and sold them in the first place. How much better would staying in Africa have been

The next time you hear someone say something so stupid, ask them:
"Well then do you think the Jews should be thankful for the pogroms and the Holocaust?"
Do you think that the Chinese should be thankful for the students who were massacred in Tiannamen Square?"
And this one may be a little bit more controversial but you can still ask,
"Do you think the Iraqis who are dying by the thousands and the thousands more who are fleeing as refugees should be thankful that Americans, the British and President Bush's "Coalition of the willing" are liberating their country?"

And listen to their response. I am sure they will tell you "Well, that's different."

most people of all ethnic backgrounds have some past ancestors who suffered atrocities in "the old country". Through the pain and misery of these ancestors was paved a better life for the descendants. If the horrors of slavery wouldn't have happened, the blacks of today would not be in america but rather in 3rd world countries starving to death.

These Caucasians must be from Tobacco Road. I am only thankful that I'm an American. God saw to that. Many whites have AIDS and live in poverty also.

why do you call yourself African American, why not
American African like the American Indian.
Why call us Caucasians? Why not American Europeans or
Europeans America?
I don't think the people that were slaves would be grateful, but their descends should be thankful for the suffrage that their forefathers endured.

You can justify anything if you only take the facts you like. The whole idea just shows ignorance.

Nope, but they sure as hell should be thankful for all of the handouts that taxpayers give 'em these days. Who knows, if they keep whining enough about "restitution", maybe they'll get even more money without earning it.

There are nuts in every group, regardless of race, but you seem to want to dwell on caucasians, so be it.
