A lot of authors don't start until they're in their late 20's/30's, but that doesn't mean everybody does.
Look at that twerp that wrote Eragon, he was 15 or whatever, but he's a bad example, a talentless hack that happened to have a mom that owned a publishing company.
For a lot of publisher's, they'll have no information about you when you submit a manuscript, they'll simply have your name and address, so they won't know your upbringing, age, or education.

Age is less important than ability. If you are under 18, your parents will be involved with contract signings and such, but you can publish at any age.
Publishers WILL look carefully at your work. The last teen writer was guilty of lifting major passages from a published work. Because of that, expect to give details on how you came up with your plot and be prepared to show them the first draft as well as the final one.

You don't have to wait to be an adult to become a professional writer. While anyone at any age could get a book published, one would have to have life experience or a good education to continuously pump out good books for publishing to carry on a career.

That's the wonderful thing about the writing profession. There are no age limits, either up or down, and no restrictions as to race, ethnicity, sex or anything else. If you are old enough to dream up an interesting story, and either write it yourself or dictate it to someone, and a publisher or an editor likes it, you're in business!

There really isn't an age requirement. Gordon Korman was first published when he was just 12 years old.

Old enough to dream up an interesting story with characters that readers can care about. And old enough to be able to either dictate it to a typist or type it yourself.

You can start at any age, but probably won't start making money until your mid-twenties, at the earliest. Journalism will pay earlier. There's really not a rule of thumb for fiction.

So long as you write well, and a publisher picks you up, it doesn't matter.
