Perhaps it's meant to symbolize the 'closeness' of the merfolk to nature vs. the distance that humans have. More likely, the demands of making a Disney picture require the cute talking animals to be attached to the heroine, since it's taking place from her perspective. Meanwhile, the sheepdog is funnier in the Harpo Marx role.

Gosh-they're all so lovable! I in all possibility like the Little Mermaid and The Lion King the terrific. Cinderella and ask your self and the Beast are actually not my num. one favorites-yet they're memorable!

it could be because its a movie and they can make anything talk to who ever or whatever they want. If you think bout it we do talk to them and they to us..we may not understand eachother but we do.
