It is a Russian stringed instrument. It is triangular shaped and has a body sort of like a guitar and strings. You play it like a guitar; it sounds kind like a cross between a mandolin and a guitar.

I think you are refering to the stringed musical instrument that originated in Russia. " Let me hear your balalaika's ringing out." Back in the USSR. Beatles from somewhere way back in the 60's section of my brain.
