Probably because your video card uses "shared memory" & 64MB is dedicated to its usage.

You can confirm this by reading the specs of your PC and/or looking in the BIOS.

*** I look at the answers after me & can't believe how many people are missing this ..... it's just 64MB being allocated to the graphics adapter at bootup ... that's all ! ***

960mb is the useable size. Your physically have 1gb (1024mb), but can only use 960mb. No idea why, all my computers are similar.

When chips are tested, some of the memory bits may not work. There are specs that mfgs go by and if the specs say pass at x amount of memory, the chip hits the market. Its not uncommon to find chips that dont have what they say. Cheaper mfgs have wider guidelines.

Companies usually lie on the size of the drive, plus the computer does not completely accurately judge the drives size.

That is showing you available memory...

windows needs a certain amount of memory to run... so it wont give it up... so you only have 960 of availble ram in your system to use for other programs...

good luck...

1024 - 960 = 64mb, probably shared graphics.
