The history of the mechanical pencil has gotten mixed up. Hayakawa Tokuji did invent one in 1915 and was later granted an American patent in 1926, but Charles R. Keeran, an American, applied for a patent on his Eversharp mechanical pencil in 1913 and was granted it in 1915.
